Easy Vietnamese Iced Coffee

I first fell in love with Vietnamese Iced Coffee in high school. I went to school near a place called “Eden,” a little shopping center that was full of delicious Vietnamese restaurants. Once in a while my friends and I would go for a bowl of pho (noodle soup) after school and, of course, always ordered a glass of iced coffee to go with it. The magic of this simple drink comes from the high quality STRONG coffee. The coffee for this drink is traditionally made with a metal slow-drip coffee filter. I tried to find one at our international market, but no luck. But that’s OK! I just brewed the coffee with a regular coffee maker and it was just as good as I remember it from high school!

Although this is extremely simple and easy to make, it’s important you use the right coffee. And in my humble opinion, the only coffee to use for Vietnamese Iced Coffee is Cafe Du Monde’s Coffee and Chicory. This is what is traditionally used in the recipe – I don’t make the rules, I just follow them ๐Ÿ™‚ Cafe Du Monde also makes a strong French Roast coffee (in a blue tin can), which would probably be delicious as well. But like I said, the Coffee and Chicory blend is your best bet.

As you can imagine, these are extra refreshing in the Summer when it’s hot out. But they are equally satisfying any other time of year!

Start by adding the coffee to a regular coffee maker. For each glass you will need 2 Tablespoons of coffee granules and 1 cup of water. This recipe makes 4 servings, so you would add 8 Tablespoons of coffee to the maker, along with 4 cups of water.

While the coffee brews, add about 2 Tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk to each glass (use a tall one).

When it’s done brewing, add about a cup of coffee to each glass.

Then fill ‘er up with lots of ice.

Then you just stir up that sweet goodness at the bottom of the glass and enjoy!
