Ham and Swiss Sliders

Super Bowl 50 is almost upon us – less than 2 weeks away! We’re going to watch the Denver Broncos take on the Carolina Panthers. I just hope it’s a good game, and that the commercials aren’t so corny :) If you’re hosting a get together to watch the big game, you’ll want to make sure you have these on the menu: Ham and Swiss Sliders. They’re easy to make, quick to prepare, and so friggin good. The first time I had these, someone brought them to a bridal shower and I was immediately hooked….and so has every person I’ve ever made them for. So make a double batch!

Start by combining the melted butter, Dijon mustard, poppy seeds, and minced onion. Whisk together until well blended.

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Then cut each roll in half.

Cut the Swiss and ham slices in half, then fold each piece in half to make smaller pieces that will fit on the bread. Layer the sliders as follows: Swiss, ham, Swiss, ham, Swiss. So you’ll end up with alternating layers of 3 folded pieces of Swiss and 2 folded pieces of ham on each slider.

Complete with the rest of the rolls then put them into a baking dish, arranged tightly together.

Spoon the butter mixture on top of each roll, covering each completely with onions and poppy seeds. The sliders will be soaked – this is what you want! Come to mama…..

Cover with foil and bake for 15 minutes. Remove foil and bake 2-3 minutes until tops are slightly browned. These are best served warm, but are perfectly delicious at room temp!

  1. 12 oz package Hawaiian sweet rolls (12 rolls)
  2. 2 teaspoons poppy seeds
  3. 1 1/2 Tablespoons dried mined onion
  4. 1/2 cup (8 Tablespoons or 1 stick) of melted unsalted butter
  5. 2 Tablespoons Dijon mustard
  6. 1/3 lb thinly sliced deli ham (I like VA honey ham)
  7. 1/2 lb thinly sliced Swiss cheese
Instructions
  1. Combine the melted butter, Dijon mustard, poppy seeds, and minced onion. Whisk together until well blended.
  2. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Then cut each roll in half.
  3. Cut the deli Swiss and ham in half, then fold each piece in half to make smaller pieces that will fit on the bread.
  4. Layer the sliders by starting with one folded slice of Swiss, then a folded slice of ham, then another Swiss, one more ham, and finally top with a folded slice of Swiss. So you’ll end up with alternating layers of 3 folded pieces of Swiss and 2 folded pieces of ham on each slider.
  5. Complete with the rest of the rolls then put them into a baking dish, arranged tightly together.
  6. Spoon the butter mixture on top of each roll, covering each completely with onions and poppy seeds.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 15 minutes. Remove foil and bake 2-3 minutes until tops are slightly browned.
Notes
  1. Tip #1: These are best served warm, but are perfectly delicious at room temp.
  2. Tip #2: This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled to make a bigger batch!

  1. These sound so yummy! I hear getting the roads cleared in Cascades has been challenging. Stay safe and warm!

    1. Thanks a lot, Patti! And yes, it’s been a disaster! The entire neighborhood basically shoveled all of sharpskin on our own over the last few days! Hope you’re enjoying sunny FL!

    1. Girl, you are going to LOVE them and so will the fam :) Let me know though, I’m always interested in feedback please!

    1. You are the bestest! Thanks for the feedback, love…and PS, i loved your post yesterday. Your boys are just the cutest little things I’ve ever seen! xx

  2. Can you make these the night before and let them sit in the fridge overnight before baking?

    1. Hi, Katie – thanks for stopping by! And yes you can absolutely assemble them the night before, refrigerate, then bake the next day. The only thing I would recommend doing is holding off on pouring the butter/mustard sauce on top of the sandwiches until right before you’re ready to bake them. Hope that helps and hope you love them!!

  3. These are amazing!!! Didn’t have any Dijon so I used honey mustard and I think it played so well the sweet Hawaiian rolls. I also added dried minced garlic in addition to the onion and it sent it over the top!!! So delish! Mozzarella slices work well as a sub for the Swiss. Thanks for sharing, they were a hit for this year’s super bowl!

    1. Oh my goodness, Sarah! That sounds ridiculously good! Thanks for sharing I will need to try that next time I make these!!

        1. Any honey ham will do (really any ham you like will do!). I hope you love these as much as we do! :)

  4. I have made them and very much enjoyed them. My whole family loves them. I was wondering if you have ever tried using turkey or chicken?

    1. Hi Liz, thanks for the feedback! I’m so glad your family loves these :) I have tried these with different fillings and they work just as well! I did turkey and swiss once and it was phenomenal. I’m sure chicken would be just as good (perhaps with gouda?? Mmmmm, that just got me hungry!).

  5. These were a huge it at our party! Warm is best, but left over is delish too!
    Thanks!

  6. A very interesting idea, Nikki! I am absolutely sure that my kids would love this ham and swiss sliders, can`t wait to surprise them, thanks a lot!

    1. Aww, what a great mom you are! These are definitely a crowd pleaser – for little and big kids alike :) Thanks for stopping by, Tania!

  7. Making these in a little while, but using sesame seeds as I don’t have any poppy right now. Doing half pan with swiss and the other half with American cheese, as my boys r wicked picky! Sliced watermelon ? on the side, and done!

    1. Sesame seeds should work just fine! And I love the sliced watermelon on the side!!! Thanks for stopping by and hope you love them, Carrie :)

    1. 100%, Rebecca! That would be a great tailgate treat :) Keep in mind these are definitely more delicious hot and melty, but I’ve eaten leftovers plenty of times straight of fridge and it is always delicious! Hope you love them!

  8. I made these a while back and I will make them again. Only thing I would do differently is either invite my children over or make 1/2 of the recipe. There are only 2 of us and they went a long way. Thank You.

    1. I made these for a tailgate gathering yesterday and they were a huge hit! I subbed the minced onion/poppy mixture and did Trader Joe’s everything bagel seasoning on top. It gave the sandwiches such an amazing flavor!

      1. OMG, Lizzy – using Trader Joe’s EBTB seasoning is pure genius!!! Thanks for trying my recipe and improving on it! I can’t wait to try that :)

  9. Don’t have dried minced onion at the moment. Can I use onion powder instead? If so, how much do you think I should use?

    1. Hi Angela, dried minced onion is the best b/c it gives a great texture and isn’t as pungent as onion powder. But you could definitely use onion powder as a substitute in a pinch! I would say to use half as much onion powder as the amount of minced onion in my recipe. Hope you love them!!

    1. Hello Joyce! Once you bake them, the buns are golden brown and a little crisp – just perfect and not wet at all :) Hope you give it a try!
