I first fell in love with Vietnamese Iced Coffee in high school. I went to school near a place called “Eden,” a little shopping center that was full of delicious Vietnamese restaurants. Once in a while my friends and I would go for a bowl of pho (noodle soup) after school and, of course, always ordered a glass of iced coffee to go with it. The magic of this simple drink comes from high-quality STRONG coffee. The coffee for this drink is traditionally made with a metal slow-drip coffee filter. I tried to find one in our international market, but no luck. But that’s OK! I just brewed the coffee with a regular coffee maker and it was just as good as I remember it from high school! If you love coffee as much as I do, but for some reason, you are yet to buy a coffee machine, it is never too late to get this new addition to your kitchen. Even though there are quite a lot of choices when it comes to finding the right one, it could be as simple as checking out reviews on sites like www.greatcoffeebrewers.com to hopefully make the decision process a lot easier. Once you make up your mind, you’ll find that this purchase was worthwhile!
Although this is extremely simple and easy to make, it’s important you use the right coffee. And in my humble opinion, the only coffee to use for Vietnamese Iced Coffee is Cafe Du Monde’s Coffee and Chicory. This is what is traditionally used in the recipe – I don’t make the rules, I just follow them :) Cafe Du Monde also makes a strong French Roast coffee (in a blue tin can), which would probably be delicious as well. But like I said, the Coffee and Chicory blend is your best bet. As well as some great coffee, you need some essential equipment to get your caffeine fix. You’ll need a great coffee maker and filter; you can find reviews and guides on these at thefullmooncafe.com.
As you can imagine, these are extra refreshing in the Summer when it’s hot out. But they are equally satisfying any other time of year! Saying that my friend recently used a coffee maker with an in-built grinder after reading reviews similar to these 6 Best Coffee Maker With Grinder Reviews. She said it tastes even better with on the spot ground coffee, so I might try that next time!
Start by adding the coffee to a regular coffee maker. For each glass you will need 2 Tablespoons of coffee granules and 1 cup of water. This recipe makes 4 servings, so you would add 8 Tablespoons of coffee to the maker, along with 4 cups of water.
While the coffee brews, add about 2 Tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk to each glass (use a tall one).
When it’s done brewing, add about a cup of coffee to each glass.
Then fill ‘er up with lots of ice.
Then you just stir up that sweet goodness at the bottom of the glass and enjoy!
- 8 Tablespoons Cafe Du Monde Coffee and Chicory
- 4 cups water
- 8 Tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
- Ice cubes
- Add coffee granules to a coffee maker, along with the water. Brew.
- Add 2 Tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk to each glass, then add 1 cup of brewed coffee on top of the milk.
- Fill to the top with ice cubes. Stir to combine the milk and coffee with a long spoon/straw.
THANKS, NIKKI,
We fell in love with this Vietnamese coffee when we lived in Falls Church. The coffee in your recipe is the coffee we use. No restaurant serves it down here in the South. :( Keep your recipes going. Each one is better than the last !!! :) XO XO Love Ya Much
